Ok, I thought for the pure act of kindness I would post my recent
problem solving methods to this whole screwed up Quicktime thing.
It started when I had problems with the recent evil Quicktime 7.2
install. Which created more problems than it was worth. I found
that my issue was shared by many blogs, forums and so on.....so
in my research I compiled all the tips, and suggestions to post
this single listing on how to get rid of Quicktime so that you can
install an earlier version. Yes, my After Effects version 7 wouldn't
start with the new Quicktime 7.2 - so thats where trouble started!
So here is where I became fustrated - after researching and implementing
the steps it still had leftover pieces that wouldn't let me install
an older or newer version of Quicktime - Ugh.
The other problem was some of the steps lacked steps based on reader
assumption........so while I don't go over everything that should
be common knowledge, I believe the info to get it done is listed
here.
Hey no- unsavvy computer user would tackle this anyways, right?
Just try not to skip things and you should be on your way to resolution.
Oh and Apple owes me alot of $ for keeping a few more phone calls
away from there service call center ;)
Note:
please do not email us directly, as we are just condensing the tips
posted in a way that makes sense to others. By following these steps,
we completely got rid of Quicktime so that we couldn't re-install
an earlier version.
We also found
that while some sites had solutions - there was still some steps
that either weren't clear or missing.
Ok here
we go........
Instructions:
login and use
an administrative privileges account. If you dont know what that
is and own your own computer, it should be set to that on logon
anyways.
Note:
you first have to open an Explorer window and select Tools-->Folder
Options from
the menu, then the View tab, and click the radio button for
show hidden files and folders,
and then the Apply to All Folders and OK buttons.
You can restore that
default by unchecking and applying it after you finish this task.
First, Start-->Control
Panel-->Add or Remove Programs and uninstall any Quicktime
programs, Itunes, IPOD and/or Quicktime alternative
(if its having problems, message may appear as well, no worries
just continue on)
Right-click
the Quicktime icon in the system tray and select Exit
(if running)
Under Start-->Control
Panel-->Adminstrative Tools
Select Services. Find iPodService and iTunesHelper
in the listing, right-click and select Stop
(if not runnning it will not appear)
Delete the Quicktime
Player icon on the desktop or any Quicktime icons
Delete the iTunes,
iPod, and Quicktime folders under C\:Program Files
Take
the additional following steps:
1 -Download and install the Windows
Installer CleanUp utility.
2 -Run this utility. It will show you a list of programs. Find QuickTime
or itunes and
remove it. (if it doesnt show any then close program)
3 -Go to the folder C:\ WINDOWS \ system32 \
4 -Delete the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qt
5 - Also - and this is very important! - look for other files
in C:\ WINDOWS \ system32 \ that look like quicktime files, they’ll
be easly recognized by the extensions .QT , .QTS or say some form
of Quicktime
Do a search
for Quicktime files on your C hardrive - if it finds any
files then delete
Do a search
for quicktime.msi - if it finds any then delete
I ran Registry
Mechanic (trial version is free) for a registry scan and
repair until the scan returned no problems. After finding this last
post on manually deleting related files, I also deleted the following:
Delete
all the following
C:\ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ Apple
Computer
\iTunes
\Quicktime
C:\ Documents and Settings \ [User Name] \ Application Data \
Apple Computer
C:\ Documents and Settings \ [User Name] \ Application Data\Microsoft
\ Internet Explorer \ Quick Launch
iTunes
Quicktime Player
Deleting
leftover regsitry keys?
I've created a .reg file that will do the work for you. This information
was posted on another site as a recommendation. Though they didnt
include the actual .reg file so I've prepared it for you

2- To run - double click on it and answer yes to the prompts.
there its done!
Extra
step if needed!
Removal of qttask.exe (if its still running)
Even though
the QuickTime tray icon is now disabled, the helper application
qttask.exe will still run for a short while everytime you start
your computer. This application is pretty much useless, so you can
disable it if you want.
Open the
Registry Editor:
Start -> Run -> type regedit and press enter.
Navigate to
the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In this key
you should see several values. One of them is QuickTime Task. Delete
that value. After that you can close the Registry Editor.
You can now
also safely delete qttask.exe. By default it is located in the folder:
C:\Program Files\QuickTime

Now you should
be ready to install a clean version!
For the record,
I like the version Quicktime 7.1.3 - to find the stand
alone installer just "Google" it and download.
Other
steps after install:
1- Open Quicktime
2- selected the Register tab, and entered my Quicktime Pro registry
key, then Apply and OK
3 - selected the Update tab, and unchecked the box to check for
updates automatically, then OK
Success!!

Video/audio
Editors and users:
Why
won't Adobe After Effects (or insert like application) start?
- You need Quicktime installed or its corrupted and needs a re-install
- If thats not it then there is an issue with a plugin or .dll -
pay attention to the error message.
Why can't i edit or extract parts of my Quicktime trailer clip
in After Effects / Premiere?
- Apple is clever and probably has it built into the coding that
prevents editing.
- In fact , yes I did read that somewhere
Solutions?
You might be able to re-capture it using Camstudio or a Harddrive
capturing application- then resave.
Basically if you can play it on your computer, then it can be
captured 1 way or another.
How bout just the audio?
Play your quicktime clip, and use "Sound Forge" to capture
the audio as its playing live "Sound Forge" - using the record
button will capture sound that's played live on your computer whether
its on a website, a CD or other audio application (I believe the
command is Contrl R)
Why won't movie's, trailers or Quicktime videos from "Apple trailers"
play?
or All I get is a black or white screen?
- You either have an older version of Quicktime or Quicktime needs
to be re-installed.
- The new trailers only play on version 7 and up.
